Children who have experienced early trauma and multiple caregivers struggle with the expectations in an academic setting. Concurrently, children at the same time they are beginning kindergarten are developing a different cognitive understanding of adoption. This can result in concerning behaviours that leave educators at a loss as to how to teach these children.
An Adoptions Consultant can attend school based meetings or Individual Education Planning meetings to discuss how to best support a child in an educational setting. They can also offer information to school personnel that will increase their knowledge of teaching adoptees and other children who have experienced trauma. Understanding the clear relationship between learning and a child’s fear system, early sensory experiences and early templates of caregivers sets the stage for successful learning.
For teachers or school based counsellors who would like more information on this topic A Child’s Song offers a workshop entitled Teaching the Hurt Child.
